Roti Kukus

roti kukus twins

Roti Kukus an Indonesian steamed bread.

Roti Kukus literally means steamed bread (roti =bread, kukus=steamed, pronounce:rotie koekoes).  Although  its called bread but strange enough with this recipe you don’ t use yeast. So actually it looks more like a cake. When we were little and we came home for lunch break our mother sometimes made this Roti Kukus for us. Once she was making it, she made a few of these delicious bread and gave it also to our neighbors. They loved it! You can make it in different flavors and colors. Or you can even make little roti kukus, and there you have sort of cupcakes! Our favorite is Roti kukus with chocolate (of course what else hihi) and Roti kukus with cinnamon.

Here is the recipe:

Ingredients

  • 5 eggs
  • 220 grams granulated sugar
  • 300 grams flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 100 cc Sprite (7Up)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • any kind of food coloring /cocoa powder or cinnamon,  it depends what flavor you prefer.

~  Prepare the steamer and let the water boil. Cover the pan with parchment paper. Wrap a towel around the lid, see the picture below ( this to make sure no water will fall on the bread while steaming).
~  Mix the eggs, sugar and vanilla sugar until its thick. Gradually add the flour, baking soda, salt and Sprite, mix this with a spatula.
~  If you want divide 1/3 of the batter into a small bowl and add cocoa powder or any colors/flavor you want.
~ Transfer 2/3 white batter into the steamer which you already covered with parchment paper, and top off with the rest of the batter.Swirl a little with a spatula to make this marble effect.
~ Let it steam for 40 minutes, do not open the steamer at the first 20 minutes.

Hope you guys will like it!

    • Dear Shanna, thanks for the compliment! 🙂 Yes this roti kukus is really delicious. We feel very blessed with our mother hihi. Have a nice weekend! I&A

  1. Oh!!! Sounds so good! Especially with chocolate! I have to admit I love to cook but am not the best at baking so I have never had vanilla sugar in the house and had to look up how to make it and/or buy it. 8-} Thank you so much for sharing this time with your family!

    • Hihi thats funny we love baking but we are not best at cooking. The one with the chocolate is our favorite too! And this recipe is very easy to make and you don’t have to use much ingredients. Thank you for stopping by and have fun making this Roti Kukus.

  2. Hi there,
Thank you very much for liking my post! I guess you will find similar types of foods and eating culture in my posts about Thailand to the ones you are familiar with in Indonesia.
Personally, I thought the roti kuku with chocolate looked most scrumptious! This is great, I was just looking for a good steamed cake recipe. I had just moved back to Thailand, and we don’t have an oven in our tiny kitchen 😦
And I never knew “roti” means bread! And all this time I’ve been eating “roti” (the puffy fried dough dessert) not knowing I was basically eating bread!

    • Hi there too 🙂 Your food recipes looks very delicious. Yes indeed Indonesia and Thailand is very similar when it comes to food. We love the Roti kukus with chocolate that’s our favorite. Your blog is very interesting to read about nutrition and how to bake without sugar. (since we use sugar in all of our baking recipes) We will try use less sugar from now on hihi and be more aware of what we eat. Thanks for sharing and keep posting! 🙂 ~ Ineke and Anneke

      • Haha thank you so much Ineke and Anneke (your name even sounds so similar).
I read this girl’s blog about foodtravel in Indonesia, and I also had a friend from Indonesia back when I lived in NZ. I think we have a lot of similar shops as well i.e. Auntie Anne’s, I think. I haven’t been doing a lot of baking lately since I no longer have a kitchen with an oven! 😦 I only have a steamer so will have to tryout all the Asian desserts instead 🙂 And will definitely continue to post more on healthy eating!

  3. I can’t wait to make this! Thanks for the recipe. I love all of your blog by the way! Thanks for liking my last post – I am new to this and trying to build up my community, so thank you!

    • Hi Carrie, welcome in the bloggers world 🙂 Thank you for you nice comment. Your recipes looks great! Have fun making this Roti kukus and if you have questions feel free to ask 😉

  4. Oooo…this looks so interesting. I love that through having a blog (thanks for liking my post) I’m coming across lots of other blogs that I might not necessarily see and I’m feeling inspired to try types of cooking that I might not otherwise. I’m more likely to try something like this after reading about it here than I would be if I read about it in a cookery book.
    Thanks so much
    Susie

    • Hi Susie! Sorry for our late reply! Yes, there are a lot of incredible blogs where you can find some delicious recipes, and more likely to try these rather than a cookery book. The best thing about (wordpress and other blogs) is that bloggers worldwide can posts their own recipes with influences of their own culture/country ( cooking-skills). So we can learn a lot from these blogs too 😀

  5. Thank you for the recipe, when i still lived at home, our mother taught us how to make it,and i use to make it all the time then we grew up and moved away i forgot about, thanks to you i’m making it again.

  6. Hoi Cewinta,

    • Apa kabar sis Lorraine?

      Bagus blog’y sis..keep posting yaa!

  7. Found this today. My niece and I are of dutch decent and have a cousin who is dutch-indo decent. For 20 years we have tried to remember this recipe. Thankyou for such a detailed recipe, it looks exactly as I remember. Looking forward to making this tomorrow. YUM!

  8. Thanks for the recipe! I loved steamed cake and I’d like to be able to make it with my niece when I go home to visit. All the best 🙂
